Becky Dempsey - Bio
Becky Dempsey was elected in November, 2002, to serve Smith County as County Judge. She is the first woman in the history of Smith County to be chosen for that honor. Prior to assuming the role of County Judge, Mrs. Dempsey was the Smith County District Clerk, unanimously appointed by the Smith County District Judges to that position in December of 1997. She was subsequently elected to the position in 1998. Prior to beginning her public service, she was in the legal profession for 13 years, having held the positions of Legal Secretary, Legal Assistant and Network Administrator. Her legal background includes civil and criminal defense, medical malpractice defense, plaintiff’s suits, tax, estate planning and probate.
Judge Dempsey attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and prior to her entering the legal field, worked for Xerox Corporation. She is very involved with her church as a choir member and has served on a number of committees. She is a member of Leadership Tyler, Class 18. In 2004, she was appointed by Governor Rick Perry to the East Texas Regional Review Committee. As Chief Executive Officer for the County, she serves on numerous other community executive boards, including the Tyler Economic Development Council and various Chamber committees. She is a member of County Judges & Commissioners Association of Texas, Smith County Republican Women, Smith County Republican Club and Republican Hispanic Assembly of Smith County. During her years of public service, Judge Dempsey has received numerous awards, including: C.C. Baker, Jr. Regionalism Award presented by East Texas Economic Development District; Women of Distinction presented by Texas College; Friend of the Taxpayer Award presented by Taxpayers Association of Smith County; and Outstanding Public Service to Senate Districts 1 and 3 presented by Cherokee County Republican Women’s Club. Becky has two children. Her son, Marshall, a 2001 Texas A&M University graduate, lives with his wife in Dallas. Her daughter, Lauren, is a 2003 graduate of Baylor University and also lives in Dallas.
