Partnerships with these local and federal agencies, allow our agency to gain valuable
training opportunities, allow access to specialized equipment, and builds partnerships
with other agencies in a united effort to fight crime in Smith County and East Texas.
The Smith County Sheriff’s Office is home to one of the most specialized, well
trained, and respected Crime Scene Units in the State of Texas. This
unit processes all crime scenes in Smith County and assists partner agencies such
as the F.B.I. and Texas Rangers across East Texas. We employ one of a few blood
spatter experts in the East Texas Area, a Computer Forensics Expert, and Computer
Forensics Lab. Pre-DNA processing, fingerprint processing, and fingerprint identification
is completed in the in-house lab prior to being sent to the Texas Department of
Public Safety Crime Lab, and other scientific labs across Texas. Our in house computer
forensics lab eliminates the need to send computers and cellular telephones to outside
crime labs reducing the completed analysis time from as much as one year to only
a couple of weeks
