The Smith County Criminal District Attorney’s Office proudly recognizes the service and accomplishments of Emil Mikkelsen, who will be departing to join the United States Attorney’s Office.
Mr. Mikkelsen joined the District Attorney’s Office in 2014 after earning his Masters of Law from the University of Texas School of Law in Austin in 2013. He began his career in the Child Protective Services Division, Protective Order Unit, later transitioned to the Misdemeanor Division, and ultimately advanced to a first-chair felony prosecutor position in the 114th District Court.
During his tenure, Mr. Mikkelsen established himself as a highly skilled trial attorney with significant experience in complex criminal prosecutions. His work included the successful prosecution of cases involving murder, assault, child victims, and a wide range of felony and misdemeanor offenses, with particular expertise in financial crimes. He was recognized with the HOPE Award from the East Texas Crisis Center for his dedication to protecting victims of crime. In addition, Mr. Mikkelsen contributed to the advancement of the legal profession by teaching criminal law courses for the Texas District and County Attorneys Association (TDCAA), providing continuing legal education to prosecutors across the state.
“Emil has been an invaluable member of our team, and his leadership and commitment to justice have left a lasting impact on our office and our community,” said Smith County Criminal District Attorney Jacob Putman. “While we are sad to see him go, we are proud of his accomplishments and wish him continued success as he serves the public in his new role as a federal prosecutor.”
