September 29, 2025 — The Smith County Criminal District Attorney’s Office is proud to announce the retirement of Mike West after 21 years of distinguished service with Smith County. West, who served as the Appellate Chief over the Appeals Division for much of his career, retired on September 30.
Before retiring, West was honored with the prestigious Kepple Award by the Texas District and County Attorneys Association. This award, one of the highest recognitions bestowed upon Texas prosecutors, honors recipients whose career accomplishments have left an indelible mark on the field of Texas criminal prosecution.
Throughout his career, West has played a vital role in shaping the work of the Smith County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, particularly through his leadership in appellate advocacy. He has argued and overseen numerous complex cases, including many death penalty appeals, ensuring justice was diligently pursued and upheld.
