Smith County Historical Commission

The Smith County Commissioners Court established the Smith County Historical Commission on January 21, 2025. The Texas Local Government Code, specifically Chapter 318, establishes the framework for county historical commissions (CHCs) to assist county commissioners courts and the Texas Historical Commission (THC) in preserving Texas' historic and cultural resources.

The Smith County Historical Commission (SCHC) is to advise the Commissioners Court of Smith County, assist the Texas Historical Commission, and to initiate and conduct programs in the identification, promotion, and preservation of the county's historic and cultural resources. The SCHC is not a competitor to other historical preservation organizations in the county and seeks to supplement and encourage their work through collaboration and cooperation.

The Commission facilitates the State Historical Marker Program in Smith County. All applications for the historical marker programs must be submitted by the applicant via the Online Portal. Please contact the Commission via email to coordinate existing and future marker applications.
